A film is - or should be - more like music than like fiction. It should be a progression of moods and feelings. The theme, what's behind the emotion, the meaning, all that comes later.

At first glance, The Perfect Host concerns John Taylor’s best laid plans being shattered when he meets quirky socialite Warwick Wilson. I wouldn’t want to reveal much more; suffice it to say that the film’s trailer barely skims the surface so to speak. Once Warwick’s true nature is revealed, it becomes difficult to discern good guy from bad guy. This, however, is one of the film’s strengths; it doesn’t beat its audience over the head with a specific philosophy. The highlight of the piece is, without a doubt, the brilliant David Hyde Pierce. As I’m not familiar with Frasier, I can’t compare Mr. Pierce’s performance as Warwick to Niles Crane. In any case his transformation over the course of The Perfect Host is truly frightening. I for one hope this really boost David Hyde Pierce’s career as an actor because I thought he was fantastic and certainly deserves some recognition.

Charlie Bartlett is a wealthy teenager who lives alone with his loopy mother. His father is in jail for tax evasion, and since then the roles have reversed, Charlie takes care of his mother, but who takes care of Charlie? After being expelled from several private schools,Charlie goes to a public school. With a lot of time in his hands and a longing for acceptation Charlie becomes the self appointed psychiatrist to the students of his new school giving advice and providing medication. Along the way he finds romance, deals with the difficulties of life and ultimately tries to be happy. Charlie Bartlett is a great (little) movie. Superb writing and a stellar, just stellar performance by Anton Yelchin. Robert Downey Jr has a minor role but makes the most of it.This flick delivers at many levels, and if you’re expecting another teen comedy, chances are you will be surprised. Quirky, fun, and clever, Charlie Bartlett turned out to be a pleasant surprise and it’s definitely worth watching.

Here’s the God-awful truth. I was looking forward to seeing this movie as the trailers seemed pretty humorous. Boy, was I disappointed! Now, firstly, I am no prude, but this film was very crude, unexpectedly and unrealistically so. The character of Miss Squirrel was just plan irritating, Justin Timberlake, who I usually enjoy seeing in movies, was rather dreadful, and Cameron Diaz wasn’t even remotely likable in any way. I know she was supposed to be a nasty piece of work, but you have to at least have some like for the characters to enjoy a movie. The only saving grace was Jason Segel who was pretty much the only likable and humorous character in the film. I can’t stress how much I DON’T recommend this movie.

Few movies in recent cinematic memory have fit into the category of “Love it or Hate it” as well as this one. Its humor is so varied, oftentimes so random, that you either find it hysterical, or you think it’s stupid. Me? I’m going with the former… I think this movie’s completely hilarious. It possesses a goofy, charming quality, and has a lot of moments that left me laughing while asking “What the hell the was that?” It seems to echo a Family Guy style of humor in that regard. I personally found the characters all pretty likable…the kind of characters you enjoy watching. There was an obvious (and effective) effort to give each character a real personality, quirks and all. In the end, I suggest you keep an open mind, sit back and enjoy the utter ridiculousness this movie affords you…and I’ll bet you find yourself laughing, even if it’s in spite of yourself.
